MS. DEWEY - A Microsoft Creation

MsDewey.com - Check this funny Microsoft Live Search. It makes use of Flash, hence takes a very loooooooong time to load. Keep noticing the acting of Ms.Dewey. To enjoy the fun, you need to have your speakers turned on. This is powered by Microsoft Live Search.

It does internet search, but I am really unhappy with its performance. Its really tooooo slow. For serious search, do not forget to click here :-).

By the way, do try these keywords and see her response - "Bill Gates", "Microsoft", "Boxing", "Video", "Channel 9", "Google", "Apple". And if you leave her alone for too long, she demands attention !

Ash turns 33 - 01/Nov/2006

Happy Birthday to Aishwarya Rai!

Aishwarya Rai (born November 1, 1973) is an Indian actress and former fashion model. She was awarded the Miss World title in 1994. Aishwarya Rai has also acted in Telugu, Bengali, Tamil and English films.

Although frequently the subject of gossip column speculation about an imminent Hollywood career, it was only in 2004 that Rai finally acted in a foreign film, when British director Gurinder Chadha hired her to play the heroine in Bride and Prejudice, a Hollywood-funded but Bollywood-ized version of Jane Austen's classic novel, Pride and Prejudice. The movie came just shy of breaking even at the US box office but earned over 400% return on investment in global revenue.

Aishwarya's latest movie Umrao Jaan releases this Friday. I wish her all the best for a successfull career.

One Mobile Handset with Two SIM Cards

I have seeing my friends/colleagues carrying two Mobile Phones with them - one Office Mobile and 2nd Personal Mobile. There was always a question in my mind of having one mobile with multiple SIM cards.

YES! Finally this is possible now. You will soon be able to use both your business and personal mobile numbers from a single handset. To be launched in 2007, a dual number service will be available on a single SIM card. But both the connections will have to be from one service provider.

The screen of a handset will display the receiver’s number and the caller's as well. Globally, T-Mobile in Germany and Vodafone and Telecom Italia in Italy offer this multi-line service. The UK’s Orange is also expected to launch the ‘dual number, single handset service’ in the next few months. In India, Ireland-based value-added services products company AePona is talking to operators like Bharti, BSNL, Reliance, Hutch and Idea to launch the service in the next 12 months. The service can also work for both pre-paid and post-paid numbers simultaneously.

China-based mobile manufacturing company, Yulong Computer Telecommunication Scientific Co., Limited is planning to launch its dual-mode smart phone in India within a short time. Yulong is a wholly-owned subsidiary of China Wireless Technologies Limited, and the first company to introduce dual-mode smart phone in the world. The handset range comes both with dual mode GSM+GSM and CDMA+GSM. The handset model CoolPAD 728 (CDMA+GSM) is priced at USD 500 and CoolPAD 288 (CDMA+GSM) is USD 240. However, there is also another model CoolPAD 728G2 (GSM+GSM). Both these models have mega pixel cameras and business applications.

Bill Gates turns 51

Happy Birthday Bill Gates - You Rock!

William (Bill) H. Gates (born October 28, 1955 in Seattle, Washington) is chairman of Microsoft Corporation, the worldwide leader in software, services and solutions that help people and businesses realize their full potential. Microsoft had revenues of US$39.79 billion for the fiscal year ending June 2005, and employs more than 61,000 people in 102 countries and regions.

Forbes magazine's The World's Billionaires list has ranked him as the richest person on earth for the last thirteen consecutive years. According to the Forbes 2006 magazine, Bill Gates's current net worth is approximately $53 billion.

Earlier in June 2006, Microsoft announced Bill Gates transition plans. Refer my earlier post here.

Bill Gates staff will be missing his birthday gift, getting him a new operating system. Windows Vista is nearly done and should be in the hands of businesses in November and consumers in January, according to the company's schedule.

That's not soon enough to give the Microsoft chairman and co-founder an operating system that's been a long time coming. Windows XP launched Oct. 25, 2001, several days before Gates turned 46.

Gates, a Scorpio, turns 51 Saturday. So if not a new version of his company's flagship product, just what do you get the richest man in the world?

Diwali (also called Deepavali, दीवाली or दीपावली in Hindi) is a major Hindu, Jain and Sikh festival/celebration. Known as the "Festival of Lights," it symbolises the victory of good over evil, and lamps are lit as a sign of celebration and hope for mankind.

The festival marks the victory of good over evil. The Sanskrit word Deepavali means array of lights that stands for victory of brightness over darkness. On the day of Diwali, many wear new clothes, share sweets and light firecrackers.

Bangalore Bundh - This time for a long period

Well, this is very much true for me these days. Reason - I got infected with Chicken Pox and cannot go out for a weeks time untill it gets cured completely. I am taking traditional medicines and noticing heeling signs to some of the boils.

I am on strict diet and taking complete rest at home. Spend time sleeping, watching TV and in betweens checking the mails. Thanks to the broadband connection at home, which is keeping me entertained.

I heard that Chicken Pox is caused by infection with the varicella zoster virus. Chicken pox is contracted by touching an infected person's blisters or anything that has been contaminated by contact with them. Adults usually have higher fevers, a more severe rash, headaches, and muscle aches, and they take longer to recuperate than children. Recovery from all symptoms takes ten days to two weeks.

Hoping to get back well soon and goto work :-)

MS to lock up pirate Vista PCs; introduces Software Protection Platform

Microsoft has declared open warfare on software pirates, revealing that it intends to lock users out of PCs that don't validate that their computer has a genuine copy of the new operating system.

Users who install a copy of Vista will be required to validate that the copy is genuine within 30 days by activating it with a genuine product registration key. Until they do so, Microsoft will send them regular warning messages with increasing frequency, counting down the days until their period of grace is up.

If 30 days expires without users validating their copy of Vista with Microsoft, the PCs will lock users out of Vista and only access to their web browser for an hour before logging them off.

Complete News

Collectively termed the Microsoft Software Protection Platform, the new technologies will introduce improvements in how Microsoft software activates, is validated online and behaves when tampering or hacking is detected. The upcoming releases of Windows Vista and Windows Server “Longhorn” – code name for the next generation of Microsoft’s server software – will be the first two products to ship with the new technologies included, but eventually more Microsoft products will adopt the technologies.

Customers will be able to easily determine the status of their Windows Vista installations. In the System Properties panel of the Windows Vista Control Panel, Windows Vista will display the genuine status of the installed copy of Windows Vista. From there, and from any screen notifying users of a failed validation, a user will be able to obtain more information on why the copy of Windows is not genuine, as well as resources for getting a genuine copy.

Windows Hibernate - What it-eeeez?

Windows XP is used as sample for this article.

What is Hibernate?

When your computer hibernates, it stores whatever it has in memory to your hard disk and then shuts down. When your computer comes out of hibernation, it returns to its previous state.

Hibernation temporarily 'freezes' the computer when the PC becomes inactive, so it won't work if you have tasks running constantly (eg downloading files). However it can be handy if you want the computer to sleep after a task has completed (such as creating a video).

OK, that's the role of hibernation - so what is the hiberfil.sys file and why is it so big? Hibernation takes everything in memory and writes it to your hard drive as the hiberfil.sys file. If you have 512MB of memory, then hiberfil.sys will be about 512MB. If you have 1GB, the file will be around 1GB. The important point to remember is that even if you don't use hibernation, hiberfil.sys will still take up this huge amount of disk space. The way to remove the file is to turn off the hibernation feature (by default, hibernate is activated automatically when XP is installed). Here's how to do it:

=> Open the Windows Control Panel
=> Double-click Power Options
=> Click the Hibernate tab, de-select the 'Enable hibernate support' check box, and then click Apply.
=> Restart your computer and hiberfil.sys will be automatically deleted.
=> If you change your mind in the future and would like to use hibernation, go to the Windows Help & Support Center and search for 'enable hibernation'. It should be the first result. The instructions detail some other steps you may need to follow to reactivate the hibernation.

SPLASH!!! Screen

Splash screen is a term used to describe an image that appears while a computer program is loading. Splash screens often don't cover the entire screen, but only a rectangle near the center. The splash screens of operating systems and some applications that expect to be run full-screen usually cover the entire screen.

Splash screens are typically used by especially large applications to notify the user that the program is in the process of loading. In other words, they provide feedback that a sometimes lengthy process is under way. A splash screen disappears when the application's main window appears.

Splash screens typically serve to enhance the look and feel of an application or web site, and hence are often visually appealing, and may also have animations, graphics and sound. However, since they may sometimes take a long time to load, they are not universally liked by users. Web splash screens are especially inconvenient for users with slow internet connections, as the first page takes longer to load.

When it comes to the Internet world(browser based application), then the Splash pages are the pages that the user sees before they actually get to a website; typically, they're flash and offer some kind of introductory animation. The user clicks "Skip Intro" or "Enter Site" and from there is taken to the site. Splash pages can also exist between pages on the same site.

You can find many good collection of Splash Screenshots at these websites:

Okay, OK, ok, okay, okeh, okey, okie (okie-dokie)

The word "okay" is currently the single-most-used word on Earth, owing to its common employment in a vast number of cultures and languages.

Okay is a term of approval or assent, often written as OK, O.K., ok, okay, okee, or more informally as simply kay, k or kk. When used to describe the quality of a thing, it denotes acceptability. However, its usage can also be strongly approving; as with most slang, its usage is determined by context.

There are several theories about the origins of this word, some of them apocryphal and none of them conclusive, although the suggested origin as an initialism of oll korrect (a misspelling of "all correct") has relatively widespread support. Whatever its origin, the word spread around the world, the "okay" spelling of it first appearing in British writing in the 1860s. Spelled out in full in the 20th century, 'okay' has come to be in everyday use among English speakers, and borrowed by non-English speakers. Occasionally a humorous form okee dokee (or okey dokey) is used, as well as A-ok.

Next time, when you use the word "OK", do remember to count the number of times you have used it in a day or hour. OKAY? :-) Also look for the OK Button everywhere in your Windows Desktop!

New Bird Discovered in India

An amateur bird-watcher has found the first new bird species to be discovered in India in over 50 years.

The strikingly colored species was identified from feathers and photos taken in remote forests in the northeast part of the country.

No specimen was taken, because "we thought the bird was just too rare for one to be killed," said Ramana Athreya, the bird's discoverer, in a statement.

Named Bugun liocichla, the small bird is described as a type of babbler, a diverse family of birds that usually live in tropical forests.

The species has olive-gray body plumage, a black cap, orange-yellow eye markings, and yellow, red, and white patches on its wings.

A nearly 100-year-old building has bit the dust in Bangalore. On Monday when Cash Pharmacy was pulled down, another of the City’s landmarks got obliterated.

Cash Pharmacy catered mainly to the people of Cantonment area. But it was also one place looked up to by all Bangaloreans who were in search of medicines and life-saving drugs unavailable elsewhere in the City.

Located at the junction of St Mark’s Road and Residency Road, the building a few years ago had a first floor with monkey tops, typical of the colonial era buildings. Its unusual elevation made it stand out from the regular tiled-roof buildings around and a wooden facia and trellis ran around the first floor verandah.

The video is about two minutes and includes some snappy music. Also, it will look much clearer if you don't run it full screen. The bigger the picture the fuzzier it will look. Happy Ganesh Festival - 27-Aug-2006

Lord Ganesh (Mumbai folks

One of the most popular Gods in India, lord Ganesh or Ganpati is considered a symbol of wisdom and a bringer of good luck. It is said that his elephant head epitomises everything related to wisdom-small shrewd eyes, long ears that miss nothing, a long nose that can smell out anything fight and his vehicle, a mouse, reflects how much importance a wise man gives to the smallest of life forms. Shown at gateways and on doors, either by visuals or symbols, generally facing the rising sun in the east, Ganesh is revered across India as a great clearer of obstacles. Meetings, gatherings, weddings, functions and celebrations begin with a prayer of lord Ganesh and no new venture-be it a new company, a new house, a new shop is inaugurated without reciting a 'mantra' of lord Ganesh.

Ganesh is remembered on chauth or chaturthi, the 4th day of every month of the Hindu calendered, but most of all on Ganesh Chaturthi which is celebrated as his birthday. Ladoos are distributed on the day-by tradition ladoos were placed in different corners of the house and eaten before the meal. Milk is offered to idols of lord Ganesh at home and at temples, and Ganesh puja is performed at all temples and hi-house prayer rooms. Fasting, feasting and distribution of sweets offered to Lord Ganesh are important aspects of Ganesh chaturthi rituals in India. Hindus pray to images of Lord Ganesha, large and small, many of them made specially for the occasion by cottage industries and street side artisans, and those that do not wish to keep the idols alive by daily prayers, offerings and lighting oil lamps, immerse them in the nearest water body (all rivers, lakes and the sea which are sacred to Hindus).

Sony Electronics has begun US shipments of its 50GB dual-layer Blu-ray disc write-once media.

The company also confirmed that it plans to start shipping 50GB dual-layer rewritable media later this year.

Happy Independence Day - 15-Aug-2006

Greetings from an Indian Blog! India Celebrates its Independence Day on 15-Aug-2006. On this occassion, a warm wishes to all the vieweres of my Blog. Wish you all a Happy Independence Day 2006.
A Brief History of India's Independence Day:
The Indian independence movement consisted of efforts by Indians to obtain political independence from British, French and Portuguese rule; it involved a wide spectrum of Indian political organizations, philosophies, and rebellions between 1857 and India's independence on August 15, 1947.

The initial Indian rebellion of 1857 was sparked when soldiers serving in the British East India Company's British Indian Army and Indian kingdoms rebelled against British hegemony. After the revolt was crushed, India developed a class of educated elites whose political organising sought Indian political rights and representation while largely remaining loyal to the British Empire. However, increasing public disenchantment with British rule — owing to the suppression of civil liberties, political rights, and culture as well as alienation from issues facing common Indians — led to an upsurge in revolutionary activities aimed at overthrowing British authority.

The movement came to a head between 1918 and 1922 when the first series of non-violent campaigns of civil disobedience were launched by the Indian National Congress under the leadership of Mohandas Gandhi. The movement comprised large numbers of peoples from across India. Gandhi and the Congress took charge of the movement and obtained cultural, religious, and political unity. Committing itself to Purna Swaraj in 1930, the Congress led mass struggles between 1930 and 1932, followed by an all-out revolt in 1942 demanding that the British leave India (a movement called the Quit India Movement). The raising of the Indian National Army in 1942 by Subhash Chandra Bose would see a unique — though ultimately futile — military campaign to end British rule. Following the trial of Indian National Army officers at the Red Fort, a Naval Mutiny in Bombay, and widespread communal rioting in Calcutta, on 15th August, 1947, India gained independence from British rule, but only at the expense of the Partition of the country into India and Pakistan.

CTRL + ALT + DEL - The 3 Finger Salute

Do you know who invented the 3 Finger Salute - CTRL+ALT+DEL? Want to know more about it? Read on...

David J. Bradley (born 1949) was one of the twelve engineers who worked on the original IBM PC, developing the computer's ROM BIOS code. He is most famous for inventing the "Control-Alt-Delete" (also known as three-finger salute) key combination that was used to reboot the computer.

"David Bradley" -- He is the One who spent 1 minute and 23 seconds in writing the source code that rescues the world's PC users for decades.

Bradley did not intend Control-Alt-Delete to be used by end users — it was meant to be used by people writing programs or documentation, so that they could reboot their computers without powering them down. This was useful since after a computer was powered down, it was necessary to wait a few seconds before powering it up again if one wanted to avoid damaging the hardware. Since software developers and technical writers would need to restart a computer many times, this key combination was a big time-saver. He used this key combination because it is practically impossible to accidentally press this combination of keys on a standard keyboard.

This key combination still exists in the Microsoft Windows operating system. It either gives a list of running programs (in the case of Windows 95 and Windows 98), or gives a list of administative functions, such as to reboot the computer, give a task list, or password protect the computer (in the case of Windows 2000 and Windows XP).

It is used for these functions because only the kernel can respond to this key combination. Other programs are interrupted by it. It is therefore a secure way to assure that the operating system is running, rather than a hostile program that emulates the operating system to record passwords or other sensitive data.

David Bradley's (Retired Now) Quote : "I may have invented control-alt-delete, but Bill (Gates) made it famous." — at a gathering at the twentieth anniversary of the IBM PC, whilst sitting in a panel with Bill Gates."

Ultimate Collection of Bootable CD's

Booting the Operating from a CDROM is sometimes helpfull, in case of your Hard Disk Operating System crash. I have found some links of such Bootable CD's available on internet.

Ultimate Boot CD - A Linux boot diagnostic CD that has many different anti virus, hard disk, networking, bios, system info, and benchmarking apps

Ultimate Boot CD (Windows Version)

Bart's Preinstalled Environment (BartPE) bootable live windows CD/DVD

The 911 Rescue CD

XP Live CD

There are many Linux(Debain, Gentoo, RPM, Slackware) based Live CD's available too...

Virtual PC - What It is?

Got this text from Dan Fernandez's Blog. A very easy, well-defined terminology of a Virtual PC.

For those who don't know, Virtual PC is a software product that allows you to run another operating system (Windows XP, Linux, or even Windows 3.1) "virtually" from inside a single computer. You'll see that PC load in a window and act as if it was a virtual PC (more info here). I'm a big VPC fan and I think this is great to hear. In fact, our developer division fully embraces Virtual PCs, so much so that the Community Tech Previews for Visual Studio "Orcas" will come as VPCs and, as an MSDN subscriber, you can download a VPC with Windows, SQL Server 2005 and Visual Studio 2005 Team System fully installed.

PC's Five Year's from now
I'm always surprised that virtualization doesn't make IT news anymore as one of the big things that will change the landscape in the future. In less then five years, Intel is aiming for a 32 core processor chip runing at 20GHz. I also don't think it's a stretch to think you'll have multiple terabyte hard drives in five years. If you combine the PC power in five years with advances in Virtual PC, you can start imagining running your day-to-day work environment, from Office to Visual Studio, in a Virtual PC.

=> Backups - Backing up a Virtual PC is as easy as copying the file. No really, that's it, copy/paste and you're done.
=> Deployment - Want to setup and configure your 10,000 employee shop? Just script each PC to download the approved company image and voila, your done. If somebody hoses their PC up, they can get up-to-speed in a matter of minutes by downloading the base image
=>Experimentation - Want to experiment with new features, just take your current VPC and create a differencing drive and go to town on it. The changes are only stored in the new drive and your "base" drive doesn't change.
=>Compatibility Testing - Want to easily test Windows XP Japanese with SQL Server 2005 English and Visual Studio 2005 Japanese? Easy, create a script to install the different permutations on a virtual PC or virtual server

Those were the best days of my Life

Applies to: Indian :-)

Some of the Old Memories... (atleast very true with a Mumbai born person)

Any of us could relate with it....

When???

When gulli-danda and kanche (marbles) were more popular than cricket...

When we always had friends to play aais-paais (I Spy),

chhepan-chhepai and pitthoo and aabaa doobee anytime ...

When we desperately waited for 'yeh jo hai jindagi'...

When chitrahaar, vikram-baitaal, dada daadi ki kahaniyaan were so
fulfilling ...

When there was just one tv in every five houses and

When bisleris were not sold in the trains and we were worrying if
papas will get back into the train in time or not when they were
getting down at stations to fill up the water bottle...

When we were going to bed by 9.00pm sharp except for the 'yeh jo hai
jindagi
' day...

When Holis & Diwalis meant mostly hand-made pakwaans and sweets and
moms seeking our help while preparing them.

When Maths teachers were not worried of our mummys and papas while
slapping/beating us...

When we were exchanging comics and stamps and chacha-chaudaris and
billus were our heroes...

When we were in nanihaals every summer and loved flying patang (kites) and plucking and eating unripe mangoes and leechis ...

When one movie every Sunday evening on television was more than asked
for and 'ek do teen chaar' and 'Rajni' inspired us...

When aath-aana (50 paisa) meant at least 10 toffees...

When left over pages of the last years notebooks were used for rough work or even fair work...

When "samrat" bread / newspaper were used for Noteboook and textbook covers...

When 'chelpark' and 'natraaj' were encouraged against 'reynolds and
family'...

When the first rain meant getting drenched and playing in water and
mud and making 'kaagaj ki kishtis'...

When there were no phones to tell friends that we will be at their
homes at six in the evening...

When our parents always had 15 paise blue colored 'antardesis' and 5
paise machli wale stamps at home...

When we remembered tens of jokes and were not finding 'ice-cream and
papa' type jokes foolish enough to stop us from laughing...

When we were not seeing patakhes on Diwalis and gulaals on Holis as
air and noise polluting or allergic agents...

The list can be endless...

On the serious note - to summarise with...

When we were using our hearts more than our brains,

even for scientifically brainy activities like 'thinking' and 'deciding' ...

When we were crying and laughing more often, more openly and more sincerily...

When we were enjoying our present more than worrying about our future...

When being emotional was not synonymous to being weak...

When sharing worries and happinesses didnt mean getting vulnerable to the listener...

When blacks and whites were the favourite colors instead of greys...

When journeys also were important and not just the destinations...

When life was a passenger's sleeper giving enough time and opportunity to enjoy the sceneries from its open and transparent glass windows instead of some superfast's second ac with its curtained, closed and dark windows ...

Blog websites are blocked in India

Following the Mumbai blasts on 11-Jun-2006, access to all blogs and websites hosted on the following servers is currently blocked in India.

• xxx.blogspot.com/
• xxx.typepad.com/
• xxx.blogs.com/
• www.geocities.com/xxx

For strange reasons, blogs hosted on Wordpress, Livejournal, MSN Spaces, Rediffblogs, IndiaTimes and Yahoo 360° are spared by the Indian censors and they are still accessible in India.

The best part is that I am writing this blog now from India :)
This is possible because the www.blogger.com website, which is the Administration Website, is not blocked. So still we can post our blogs from India for outside world.

A great security implementation by Indian Govt!!! I am not sure whom to report this security hole!

Microsoft Adds "My Private Folder" To Windows

Microsoft has released an add-on to Windows XP that creates a password-protected "My Private Folder" for storing private documents and files. Some enterprise administrators immediately objected.

Microsoft Private Folder 1.0, which can be downloaded from the Redmond, Wash. developer's Web site -- users must prove that their copy of Windows is legitimate by running the controversial Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) tool -- places the new folder on the desktop.

"It's a useful tool for you to protect your private data when your friends, colleagues, kids or other people share your PC or account," Microsoft said on the page dedicated to the new tool.

Commentators to the MSBlog site, however, quickly blasted the add-on.

"Have they even thought about the impact this could have on enterprises?" wrote someone identified as Stuart Graham on Thursday. "I'm already trying to frantically find information on this product so that a) I can block to all our desktops and b) figure out how we then support it when users inevitably lose files.

"I can see the benefit in this product for home users but it's a bit of a sloppy release by Microsoft (no documentation from what I can see and no enterprise management facilities)," Graham continued.

Private Folder 1.0 runs on Windows XP SP2.

Identify Sun Solaris Version

Determining the version of Solaris that you are running is important, especially when installing software packages, operating system patches and any other applications.

I had to get this information before installing the Cognos software. After a quick search on Google, I found the information below:

UNAME command - The uname command can be used to retrieve the OS version. It has following options:

uname -a = returns Basic Information
uname -i = returns Hardware Implementation
uname -m = returns Machine Hardware Name
uname -n = returns Nodename/Hostname
uname -v = returns OS Version
uname -r = returns OS Release Level

Solaris is the new marketing name of the Sun OS. Hence, both of these have different version numbers. Solaris 9 is also known as Sun OS 5.9.

A very good detailed information (including the Solaris and SunOS Version number mapping) can be found at Wikipedia link.

Quick Hands-on Oracle

After a long time, I got change to setup Oracle 10g on Windows. The task was to setup Cognos8 with Oracle connectivity. Thanks to my ex-colleague (Riaz Ahmed), who helped me to recollect the basic commands in Oracle:

1) Creating a Database:
- Used Database Configuration Assistant (dbca)

2) Creating new users for Database:

Using SQL*Plus, login as SYSTEM user to the DB Instance and use the command
SQL> CREATE USER crn8 IDENTIFIED BY crn8;
SQL> GRANT CONNECT, RESOURCE, DBA to crn8;

3) Restore a Oracle Dump File that comes as Cognos Samples:
From Command Prompt, use the command

imp fromuser=crn8 touser=crn8
file=filepath.dmp
commit=y
log=filename.log

The tnsnames.ora needs to be configured at the Client PC to communicate with the Oracle Database Server. This file is usually found at ORACLE_HOME\network\admin folder.

Some more additional command to verify the Oracle Server/Instance status:

- lsnrctl status
- lsnrctl status DB_NAME
- tnsping DB_NAME

Ins and Outs of Virtual Server 2005 Administration and IIS

Found this post of David Wang very informative.

Virtual Server 2005 ships with a native code EXE program named VSWebApp.exe which calls the native COM based API. VSWebApp.exe implements CGI/1.1 to read/parse input and provide HTML as output, so it naturally runs as a CGI executable on IIS to provide a web-based administration interface.

HTTP 401.3 - Access denied by ACL on resource

I am getting the above error at my work place for a simple HTML page. This is happening for Images. The image is shown as broken link and when I try to access the image with complete URL (http://localhost/links/images/web-mail.gif), it gives me the error:

You are not authorized to view this page
You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials you supplied.

HTTP 401.3 - Access denied by ACL on resource
Internet Information Services

My Environment is: Windows XP Professional Service Pack-2. And I believe that this comes with IIS-5.1.

Finally I got this fixed with help of David Wang's blog post. FileMon is a wonderfull tool. Thanks to David Wang's blog.

Please leave your comments, if you have encountered this problem before.

CodePlex - Microsoft's answer to SourceForge goes Live

Microsoft took a stab at an open source community for Windows developers this week with the launch of CodePlex at the Open Source Business Conference in London.

The community development site went into public beta last month, providing a dozen Microsoft open source projects and another 18 Shared Source-related projects with a single place to call home.

"One thing we really wanted to do with CodePlex was to provide an environment where developers can collaborate with the Microsoft community and external developers," said Jon Rosenberg, director of community source programs at Microsoft.

As part of the project, Microsoft is helping open projects get set up on the steps of Shared Source licensing, how to manage the project and deal with all of the licensing and source code control issues, he said.

Microsoft gets around 150 requests per week to host projects, but for the time being is only adding around five to 10 per week.

CodePlex is built on Microsoft's Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server and provides source control, bug tracking, discussion forums and RSS feeds in and out of each project.

Prior to CodePlex, Microsoft's open source projects, such as its Atlas extensions for AJAX and IronPython language, were scattered around MSDN. And three projects –- Windows Installer XML (WIX), Windows Template Library and FlexWiki –- were hosted on SourceForge, an open source hosting site on which CodePlex is modeled.

Based on experience gained with the SourceForge experiment, Microsoft decided to create its own community for developers who follow its Shared Source Initiative.

SourceForge is mostly home to more relaxed open source projects that follow the GPL and other unrestricted licenses.

CodePlex participants will need to download a small client for code check-in and check-out, which is available for free, said Rosenberg.

There will be some cross-linking and referencing between CodePlex and Port 25, Microsoft's open source lab. There will be connections between the two and sharing of links back and forth, said Rosenberg.

Let the computer Read Out the PDF Content for you

Did you know this? You can listen to any PDF instead of reading with Adobe Reader 7.0 or 6.0, and the short-cut keys are:

To Hear The Current Page - Ctrl+Shift+V
To Hear The Entire Document - Ctrl+Shift+B
To Pause - Ctrl+Shift+C
To Stop - Ctrl+Shift+E

Open any PDF File and test the above. Its amazing!!! Thanks to Ganesh Dalvi for sending this tip through mail.

After going through the Adobe website, I learnt that:

Adobe Reader 7.0 contains many capabilities specifically designed to make it easier for people with disabilities to read PDF files, regardless of whether the files have been optimized for accessibility. It leverages accessibility functions built into Windows® and Macintosh operating systems, and allows adjustment of user preferences to optimize the reading experience for a variety of disabilities.

Windows XP SP2 - Blocks some ports - some applications may not work!

After you install Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), some programs may seem not to work. By default, Windows Firewall is enabled and blocks unsolicited connections to your computer. This article discusses how to make an exception and enable a program to run by adding it to the list of exceptions. This procedure permits the program to work as it did before the service pack was installed.

This is a good KB article I found which details the issues with Applications. You will learn about how to identify Ports and PID's here.

This link is a must for me, since I am using Win XP SP2.
